Aquamag®: The Basics |
AQUAMAG® is a high-quality Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) slurry that is a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) chemical. AQUAMAG® is a non-hazardous, environmentally-friendly product that freezes at 32° F. AQUAMAG® is considered a weak base that has a pH of 10.5 in its natural, delivered state. Nevertheless, AQUAMAG® acts as a strong buffer – capable of neutralizing acids of all concentrations to roughly the 9.0 pH range. The following equation represents this acid neutralization reaction.
Mg(OH)2 + Acid → Mg Salt + Water
The magnesium salts formed are soluble and generate less sludge and solid wastes than either lime or caustic soda. AQUAMAG® also provides more alkalinity for pH control than either of the other two substitutes. It requires 21% more lime and 27% more caustic soda to neutralize the same amount of acid as AQUAMAG®.
